Help Santa out…

Do the chubby fella a favour and buy your own Christmas presents. He's got enough to do.

Come down to Of Cabbages & Kings market at Abney Hall, 73a Church Street Stoke Newington, London, on Saturday 3 December, and spend your money on hand-made, unique loveliness from lots of clever designer/makers.

This is my penultimate market. The last one will be Of Cabbages & Kings on 18 December. Over the last few years I have done Spitalfields, Brick Lane, a London market that doesn't deserve free publicity, as well as several lovely craft fairs all over London, and have decided it's time to put the suitcase away and reclaim my weekends. And it'll be nice to attend these events as a punter and supporter of handmade instead of a trader.

I will still be selling online at Folksy. For now.

So come and say hello. You know you want to.

Experimenting – part one

I don't know how other people go about designing things, or where they get their ideas from. As I don't have a design or art background I always wonder whether I'm doing this whole bag-making thingamabob right. I'm not great at drawing, so I usually start here…

No, I don't go shopping.

Holy scrap!

These are just the small bits of leather I have. I have more leather pieces, all various sizes. When I say I don't throw away any leather, I mean it. Actually, that's a lie. I do throw stuff that is less than 1cm and too fiddly to work with. And when the shopping bag gets too full I take some of the bigger bits it to my mate Tony, who sells sewing machines, so he can use them to show customers if a machine can handle leather. Anyway, I digress.

So bascially, in a very Blue Peter fashion, I get out my scraps, rotary cutter and glue and see what I come up with. Here are a few examples I made earlier…

Even the back looks quite pretty.

I think these look like a bit like ravioli. I've basically sewn squares and pushed them around a bit, glued and sewn them.

Not quite sure what I had in mind with this – but it reminds me of corrugated cardboard. I've pulled this sample about a little bit to see how it changes. I'll only know what it really looks like and how it behaves when I make it into a purse.

The next step is to make them into something to see if they're up to being handled a lot, put into bags, thrown around, dropped etc. The usual wear and tear we put our bags and purses through. Also, while some of these samples look nice as they are, they could look diabolical as something other than a sample. But don't worry, they don't go to the home for unwanted purses, I use them. Which probably isn't the best advertisement for Cosy goods!

Anyway, I'm off to try out something with a blind hemmer. See you in part two.

Friday 22 July 2011

I will be attending the Craft Guerrilla Summer Fair next week in Walthamstow Village. It's the fourth summer fair for Craft Guerrilla and my first, so I'm excited and a bit nervous as these events are renowned for the quality and selection of their designer/maker products. So I'm probably more than a bit nervous. But a fully licenced bar will be running and there's bound to be cake, so it should be a good day.

Come along, have a drink, say hello and buy something (not necessarily from me). It's Saturday, 30 July from 12 noon to 5.30pm at the Orford House Social Club, Orford Road, Walthamstow E17 9QR. It costs a quid to get in, but is well worth it I'm told.

And if you're not familiar with the East London Craft Guerrilla, check out their site, which has info on the many craft nights and events they run.

Life can be bazaar…

…or at least it will be next weekend – 14 & 15 May. I will be at the Chiswick Bazaar with lots of lovely sellers. And here are some some of the things I'll be bringing with me.

Then I promise to do a post about something other than craft fairs. I hope you like EastEnders.

Craft fairs and piccy wiccies

Well, it's more than a month since I posted but I haven't spent all that time watching EastEnders. I've been busy getting stock ready for craft fairs – two in particular. I will be at Of Cabbages & Kings market days Saturday 5 May and Sunday 6 May in Stoke Newington, then the Chiswick Bazaar, in Chiswick, on Saturday 14 May and Sunday 15 May. But I will be reminding people about those nearer the time.

Here are a couple of the things I'll be taking with me. More pics and details soon.

New Year's resolution…

This blog was/is my New Year's Resolution. For this year. I'm only nearly four months late but better late than never, I say. Besides, it's taken me that long to work out how to do a header that didn't fill the whole page.

Hopefully my blogging skills will improve with practice and I may even manage to upload the odd photo. Or two.

Anyway, the whole point of this blog is to keep people up to date with what I'm doing/making/selling for my little venture - Cosy. I've thrown myself on the craft circuit this year and would like to let people know where I am.

I aim to post regularly and will also try to be mildly entertaining. But one thing at a time, eh.

See you soon!
